I am honestly so lucky and so grateful! I have travelled to the Jigokudani Monkey Park before and it was fantastic, but that was in March last year and there was no snow. I still thoroughly enjoyed it and I didn’t think I was going to ever get to go back again. Then my husband surprised me and my mom with a visit there just recently. The forecast said no snow, which was unfortunate but couldn’t be helped. On the drive up there was a splattering of snow here and there but no sign of real snow. We parked up and walked to see the monkeys before checking in to our hotel. It was fantastic to get a second chance at seeing these amazing animals.
We came back and checked in and were given a outstanding Kaiseki meal, I seriously love Japan! We all climbed into our little futons and slept with satisfied stomachs and heads full of monkeys.
Then we woke up – to a sky full of snow and a thick layer of snow all over the ground! Lucky is an understatement! So my mom and I dressed up warm and put on our boots and got to walking. We were up at the entrance by the time it opened and it was very different seeing the monkeys in the snow. It really did give the experience another dimension. I loved every second of it as did my mother and she eventually dragged me out.
It is one of those things about Japan that is just so special. I truly felt the connection with nature.
